You know that feeling?

When you put your hope and trust completely into something, and then it turns out to be not at all what it portrayed itself to be?

When you’ve built up excitement and anticipation for a certain object, person, or event because you’ve experienced it before and it was a wonderful experience and you’ve been looking forward to it ever since? A diamond necklace, meeting Elon Musk, or an invitation to a Cool Kids party even though you’re a Hopeless Nerd through and through?

And then you see that thing (or person or event) and it looks as beautiful and wonderful as ever? And the anticipation just continues to build to unprecedented levels? And you think to yourself, “How can I be so lucky to be here right now?!”

And then the moment of truth arrives and you open the package to admire the necklace—only to discover that it’s a dollar store quality imitation necklace? And that the man you just met was not your childhood hero, but merely a professional Elon Musk impersonator? And you show up to the address listed on the party invitation and it turns out to be an elaborate prank that the Cool Kids pulled to make you feel horrible about yourself because high school is the worst?

Betrayal.

Through and through.

It’s the one of the worst, most sickening feelings in the world.

You think you really know someone, but then they turn around and pull something like this and completely pull the rug out from under you without a second thought. You’re left with nothing but shame and disappointment and questioning why you even trusted in the first place.

If you’re in that spot right now, my heart goes out to you. I stand with you. Know that life will go on and you’ll be stronger because of this, even though it was less than enjoyable in the process. You’ll make it.

That being said. . .
