The server/customer dynamic can be a tricky one.

It requires observation, intuition, and the ability to pick up on others’ emotions on the part of the server in order to give the customer the best experience.

Should you be an Invisible Server who only brings the food, fills waters, and stays out of the way to let the magic happen best without you?

Should you be the Sickeningly Sweet Server who says “Honey” and “You sweet thing” and makes everyone else feel like they’re back at home in their granny’s kitchen?

Or should you be the Banter And Sarcasm Because I Know You Can Handle It Server who makes the customer feel like the funniest person in the world?

Reading a group is delicate.

Normally I stay on the safe side of things because humor is such a touchy thing and I’m not good with banter unless I know that someone will understand the joke.

Tonight my table asked if I had control over the raffle announcements. I informed them that I really did have complete control over the raffle, and I’d inform the announcers to be sure to give the next round of prizes to their table, and why on earth didn’t they ask me sooner.

It’s not really that funny after writing it out like that, but they laughed really hard.

Maybe it was the alcohol.

Anyway, sometimes you should just be a little bit full of it and see what happens.
